The Department of Agriculture has confirmed that roughly €3m will be made available by the Department for the 2019 National Reserve, funded without a linear cut to all BPS payments.

The National Reserve provides a top-up for eligible young farmers for low-value entitlements or for naked land, which does not currently have an entitlement. The entitlement for naked land is based on the national average of €184/ha.

“Since 2015 the National Reserve has proven to be a huge success in facilitating the entry of over 7,700 young, well-educated persons into the farming community through the allocation of over €31m in payment entitlements," Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed said.

This scheme has helped young farmers entering farming

Macra na Feirme president James Healy welcomed the news saying: “It is important to have an ongoing and consistent National Reserve scheme to give young farmers the confidence to enter and progress in farming.

“This scheme has helped young farmers entering farming to get a fair and equitable start relative to their counterparts.

“Once the scheme is opened as part of the BPS application, young farmers who are eligible should apply without delay”.

Approximately €2.58m has been paid out as part of National Reserve payments for 2018, according to the Department.
